A bit of history:

The Токарь Теичъ chess set (Tokar Teich Chess Set) is a traditional Russian chess set renowned for its intricate craftsmanship and historical significance. This set reflects the essence of Russian folk artistry and is believed to have originated in the late 19th century in the workshops of skilled artisans from the Tver region, known for their exceptional woodturning and carving skills.

Origins and Name

The name "Токарь Теичъ" translates to "Turner Teich," where "Tokar" refers to a turner or lathe worker in Russian, highlighting the woodworking expertise that characterizes the set. "Teich" could either be a nod to a master craftsman or a traditional branding mark, signifying its association with a specific artisan or workshop lineage.

Design Features

The chess pieces in the Токарь Теичъ set are notable for their unique, tall, and slender designs, which are distinctly different from other Soviet style chess set patterns. The knights feature is more like a Staunton style, while the bishop has the miter cuts, never seen in any of the other Russian styles. The pawns and other pieces exhibit symmetrical elegance, with an emphasis on balance and playability.

The Indian Chess Company has collaborated with renowned chess collector Chess Praxis and has masterfully reproduced the Токарь Теичъ chess set in ebony and boxwood. The original research for Tsarist Staunton Chessmen has been done by Chuck Grau and Sergey Kovalenko and have beautifully written the piece on Chuck's website(check references).

These reproductions capture the set's iconic tall, slender design and intricate detailing, offering chess enthusiasts a timeless blend of historical elegance and modern luxury. Perfect for collectors and players alike, this set is a tribute to the enduring legacy of classic chess design.

Magnificent Reproduction, my vote for chess set of the year

Magnificent reproduction of the vintage circa 1887 Turner Teich chessmen. A great looking set with pieces that exhibit an imposing board presence. The gorgeous hand carved knights add to the beaqauty of this amazing set. The hefty wide-based pieces are a joy to move across the board squares. And what about the antique finish for the "white" pieces....OUTSTANDING!. If you want an exact historical reproduction of the gorgeous Turner Teich set and a fabulous collectible playing set , here you are! Kudos to Gurpreet for making this beauty avaiable to discerning collectors and players alike. My vote for chess set of the year.
