A bit of history:

The Dubrovnik chess set holds a special place in chess history, not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its association with some of the game's greatest players, most notably Bobby Fischer. The set was first designed and crafted in 1950 for the Chess Olympiad held in Dubrovnik, Croatia (then part of Yugoslavia). Its design was a departure from the traditional Staunton set, with unique features that emphasized functionality and beauty.

The pieces were meticulously crafted with smooth, flowing lines, eliminating the sharp edges that are common in other designs. The knights, in particular, were distinguished by their minimalist yet elegant form, giving the set a distinctive character. The Dubrovnik set also lacked religious symbols, such as the cross on top of the king, which was an intentional move to make it universally appealing.

Bobby Fischer, the 11th World Chess Champion, famously adored the Dubrovnik set, calling it his favorite. He was known to praise the set for its perfect balance and craftsmanship. In fact, Fischer went to great lengths to acquire one, reportedly owning a 1950 Dubrovnik set that he cherished throughout his career. He appreciated how the pieces were well-proportioned, with large bases that were stable on the board, and how the set’s simplicity allowed for ease of play during intense matches.

The Dubrovnik chess set, with its clean design and association with one of chess’s legends, continues to be highly sought after by collectors and players alike. It stands as a symbol of both chess history and timeless design.

Very nice, and fair price!

This Dubrovnik set is awesome; the craftmanship is excellent - I could not spot any flaw. The Padauk wood features the nice reddish color I could expect from the pictures. The price was more than fair and the shipment completed (to France) within 5 open days!
A great buy...
